I’ve been reading Simply Jesus by Joseph M. Stowell. I’m not sure where this book came from. I don’t recall buying the book or receiving it as a gift, but I’m reading it again for the second time. It’s that good.
Joseph Stowell is the seventh President of Moody Bible Institute. I don’t know if he’s the current President or not, but he’s written several books—which I plan to read.
In Simply Jesus, the main idea is to value Jesus over everything. Stowell often refers to Paul who gave up all his earthy trophies and credentials for the sake of knowing Christ. I’ve highlighted much of this book. Statements like: “At some point in life, we have to come to grips with whether “He” or “me” is the main feature of our existence.”
If you’re a believer, I’m sure you just applauded in agreement to that statement. I did too. But let’s get real for a moment. Aren’t you really the main feature of your existence?
If you’ve ever asked yourself questions like, “Who am I?” “What do people really think of me?” “Have I been recognized for my accomplishments?” “Does anybody care what I think?” or “Does this outfit make my butt look big?” Then, you are the focus of your existence.
Just take a stroll through any bookstore and you’ll find shelves full of self-discovery books. Why—because we are utterly captivated with ourselves. We want to know “who we are.” The way to truly discover ourselves is to forget about self and becoming fully devoted to Christ. I know. It seems ridiculous. Buy knowing Christ is key to finding peace with ourselves.
People are looking for self-worth when they need to look to Christ. In Christ is your self-worth. He died for you! He forgives you of all your past, present, and future sins, He given you all of His precious promises, His divine nature, a secure place in eternity, and He calls you His every own.
There is no greater worth than that, my friend! Let’s face it. Preoccupation with self is empty. What we need is Jesus.
May the love of God and how He values you fill you and satisfy you today.

I am learning this concept very quickly. I am finding out that this life is not mine but His! I am supposed to be His hands and feet and be Jesus to this world. I must admit sometimes this can be very hard.

wow, I will be adding this to my books to read list! Thank you for your post. It is all about Jesus. I am learning to ask for what Gods wants of me rather than what I want for myself.

How true this is Micca! The ‘what about me’ questions sneaks up in my mind sometimes. I just confess my thoughts to God and ask for help to look past myself to what He wants. It keeps me praying for sure. I am coming to She Speaks again this year and hope to chat with you. B
