Hi there! If you’ve stopped by today because you’ve read my devotion, My Heavenly Referee, from Proverbs 31 Ministries or Crosswalk.com, welcome! The role of the Holy Spirit in our lives can be confusing. I hope todays devotional and my post below helps you better understand how the Holy Spirit desires to be a part of every area of your life.
Are You Tuned In?
When I was a teenager living at home, my dad made a grandfather clock. We all admired it. We admired the fact that my dad actually made it. We admired its beauty and the sound of chimes that rung on the hour every hour. Yes, it was something to enjoy—during the day that is.
The first night I tried to sleep the clock kept me awake. Just as I started to doze, DING went the clock. My sleep went interrupted for weeks. Finally, one morning I realized I had slept the entire night without waking to the sound of the clock once. Yep! I had learned to tune out the clock.
I suppose our ability to tune out certain distractions is a good thing, but sometimes we’re tempted to tune out “divine interruptions” of the Holy Spirit instead of listening to His promptings.
When the Holy Spirit dwells within us, He works in our life as our counselor, our helper and our teacher. He convicts of sin, gives us spiritual gifts and guides us to be more life Jesus.
He may nudge you to forgive someone for something you did or said. He may remind you to pray or bring a verse to mind when you’re in a particular situation. He will warn you not to give into temptation or strengthen you when you’re weak. He’ll convict you when you watch an inappropriate movie or when you need to share him with a loved one. The bible says, “The Holy Spirit will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26).
When the Holy Spirit interrupts, it’s best to be tuned in to His voice. Memorizing God’s Word will help you discern the voice of the Holy Spirit as opposed to your own voice, the worlds voice or Satan’s voice.
If we didn’t need a helper, God would have never given us the Holy Spirit. Yes, some interruptions need to be tuned out, but the “divine interruption” of the Holy Spirit is a voice we need to be tuned into on a daily basis.
Lord, help us to hear your promptings. Make them clear. Teach us to recognize your still, small voice that leads us, teaches us, protects us and corrects us. In Jesus Name-amen.
I’d like to invite you to join my online bible study, An Untroubled Heart, about finding a faith stronger than all your fear. All you need is my book, your bible and an open heart!

So needed that reminder today on “divine interruptions.” Making a difficult decision today, your post reminds me to sit with my Father and let Him guide me in the decision.
Micca says
He will guide you Veronica. Praying for your decision.

Micca, I have recently described referred to a “pause” in my life, but I think I like the term “divine interruption” even better. Have a blessed day!
Micca says
Yes, the Holy Spirit often “pauses” life to speak! May we heed His voice.

oh wow. im actually frightened. i dont know if you will read this but i feel like God has been warning me of somethings and I am not sure how i am to respond. when things were so heavy and difficult i competely shut down because i didnt want to hear what GOD sometimes when HE spoke it was soooo far from where i was so it sometimes it was things that were shocking to me. i expected Him to come softly but He would tell me of dangers and tragic things i wasnt tuned in. like there were alot of shootings around and i greatly fear violence, and retribution, i mean how do you deal with those times when GOD comes to you with dramatic things. perhaps HE tells you b/c you can handle it. sometimes i dont think i can really. thanks.

Alli, I don’t understand either – just wanted to give you a virtual hug. God loves you.

I’ve had difficulty with memorizing scripture. It seems almost impossible with my memory (I know, nothing is impossible with our God!). I’ve been feeling lately maybe I’m just getting the watered down version too much. I read alot of Christian books. They’re good books but the majority of my reading should be coming from the direct source, my bible. I will still keep up my reading of other books (in proper moderation). Like this bible study which I know is going to be awesome. That still small voice has been telling me there is fear still found within this heart. Control issues, trying to control circumstances around me (this is only perceived control). Why do I hold on so tightly to that? Why do I get so anxious that it sends me running to buy something online (more books!) or eating when I’m not even hungry? In my head I KNOW God is in control, why can’t I just trust in that? He’s always been good to me, always faithful, always loving, always so patient. I’m trying to get to the root of this and I truely believe God has set this time and bible study to bring it to the light. Thank you Micca!
Micca says
Glad you’re studying alone with us, Caroline. I, too, believe God wants to use this study to show you the areas and fears that you need to surrender to Him. Blessings!

I also struggle with leaving my cares in God’s hands. I am a total control freak so if something is going the way I think it should go, then I step in and take over. I need to be more patient- not in my time, but in God’s time, and He and I have such different time tables!
Micca says
Loretta, we all struggle to leave it in God’s hands. And yes, I wish He owned the same watch as me, but He doesn’t. But one thing I know, His timing is always perfect!
