The fairness of God is seen in the cross of Christ.
Have you ever said to God, “That’s not fare!”
…it’s not fare he went free after what he did to me.
…it’s not fair she got the promotion when I did all the work.
…it’s not fair, they should have gotten what they deserve.
From the world’s perspective, fairness is receiving exactly what he or she deserves. Thankfully, this is not God’s definition of fairness. If it were we’d all end up in hell paying for our sin.
The bible tells us that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23). What we deserve is eternal punishment. But God… in His great mercy, love, and fairness sent His Son to pay our sin debt with His own life. This is how God remains fair. The punishment of sin was met when Jesus died in our place. In turn, we receive more than we deserve. Much more!
As I consider the cross this Easter season, I’ve realized that God is much fairer than I. Every time I think, they should get what they deserve, I’m refusing to extend to that person the same grace I have received. However, as an imitator of God, I should be quick to mirror His grace and forgiveness to others as He has done for me. It’s only fair.
