“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6
On May 27,1965, The Rolling Stones released a single record entitled Satisfaction.
Keith Richards, the author, thought it was too basic to amount to anything, but he was wrong. The song was a hit. The lyrics resonated with people everywhere.
I can’t get no satisfaction
‘Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can’t get no…
We’re all looking for satisfaction in life. Sometimes we try and fill that space with objects we think will gratify us, only to be disappointed later.
This is because Jesus is the only One who can satisfy our deepest longings.
Someone once said that every human has a “God-shaped hole” in our soul. Honestly, there have been times I’ve tried to fill that void with eating food when I’m hurting, forging relationships when I’m lonely, and shopping when I feel depressed. Perhaps you can relate. We are not without hope. Jesus promises us in today’s Scripture that He will fill us.
To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to have a deep desire to live like God, to please Him, and to see justice in the world.
When you and I live in hot-pursuit of God’s goodness and righteousness, we’ll experience a satisfaction equivalent to feeling stuffed after a tasty meal! Yet, ironically, this satisfaction never fades if we stay hungry! Truly this is a message of hope to all who are lost, as well as for the long-time believer.
It easy to feel content when we first invite Jesus into our lives, but often that’s when our hunger and thirst stops. Before we know it, we’re indulging in the same sin that left us empty and caused nothing but pain and suffering in the past. This is not the time to look at others’ sins, but rather the time to gaze inward at our own hearts.
May I ask, what are you filling your appetite with right now other than Jesus? Where is your heart?
The Rolling Stones were right. There is no contentment in this world. Real satisfaction will never be found in anything less than Jesus.
