I often respond to the emails we receive at Proverbs. One lady wrote us asking how she could know the will of God. That’s not a new question. Knowing the will of God concerns every Christian. We want to know the big picture and the daily details. We want to know what God wants us to do and how He expects us to live. The good news is God is not mysterious about his plan for your life or mine. He wants us to know and follow His plan. God knows that doing His will is how we’ll find true meaning in life. That’s not all. We’ll also experience a deep satisfaction and sense of accomplishment and purpose.
So how can we know the will of God? It’s simple.
First, Commit yourself to the Lord each day. Dare to say, “Not my will but your will be done.” I often pray Gal 2:20. By doing so I’m acknowledging that my will, rights, attitudes, desires, and plans have been nailed to the cross. I’m dead so that Christ is free to live His life through me. This is the only way I can truly be the wife and mother that my husband and children need. It’s the only way I can encourage my neighbor or speak to a group of women. Dying daily and asking God to live in me is the first step toward accomplishing His will for my life.
Secondly, Trust God to guide you, and trust Him to send you the relationships and work you need to fulfill your God-given purpose. This means you and I must make ourselves available. We must answer the phone, the door, and our email. We must live aware of opportunities. We must seek God, listen for the Holy Spirit, and study God’s Word in order to discern our path. Do these things and one day you’ll find yourself living in the middle of God’s plan for your life.
